Real-time monitoring of tailings dams
Context
In a group of mining companies in Bolivia, there was a need to improve real-time remote monitoring of tailings dams. These sites were already equipped with auscultation systems, such as piezometers and seismographs, but they lacked remote data transmission capability.
Tailings dams, which are critical infrastructures in mining operations, pose significant risks due to potential water seepage or natural events that may compromise their integrity. To mitigate these risks, it is essential to have a monitoring system that provides real-time information on the dam's condition.
Challenge
The client sought a comprehensive solution that would enable continuous remote monitoring, facilitating decision-making based on accurate and up-to-date data.
The required solution had to provide internet connectivity for existing equipment, a centralized platform for data storage and visualization, and remote access for diagnostics and maintenance tasks. All of this was crucial for the safety and efficient operation of the mines.
Solution
GIE GROUP designed a comprehensive IoT-based instrumentation and monitoring solution called GIE CLOUD. The process included surveying and specifying instrumentation requirements, monitoring system engineering, provision and installation of instrumentation, data acquisition, transmission, storage, and visualization.
GIE CLOUD, developed by GIE GROUP's Digital Transformation department, is an IoT platform that manages internet-connected devices, facilitating data collection, processing, and analysis. Its main features include connectivity, device management, data collection and storage, and data processing and analysis.
GIE CLOUD significantly improves tailings dam monitoring by unifying real-time information query and visualization from anywhere, regardless of the technology and/or type of monitoring devices used.
